Curriculum Overview

At Carlton Hill Primary School, we have thought very carefully about what we teach, when we teach it and why we teach it. We have taken a fresh look at our long term planning and how we intend the powerful stories of each unique subject to unfold.

Why do we teach the subjects we teach?

It's a question worth considering... And we have!

At Carlton Hill Primary School, we asked all of our subject leaders to explain (in just one sentence!) why their subject is worth learning about. This is what they said:

Reading

Reading grows our imagination and helps us understand the world.

Phonics

Phonics gives us the tools to read and spell new words.

Speaking and Writing

Speaking and writing help us share our ideas and our emotions.

Maths

Mathematics is about making discoveries and learning skills for everyday life.

Science

In Science we ask questions… and answer these questions by doing.

Computing

Computing is problem solving. We don't say: 'It doesn't work!' Instead we say: 'Let's debug it!'

PSHE

Personal Social Health Education helps us to have happier, healthier and safer lives.

RE

Not everyone shares the same beliefs but we all share one world.

History

History is about who we are, how we got here and where we are going next.

Geography

Geography is understanding places, spaces and our connections to the world.

PE

PE is important for your mind, your body and your soul.

French

We are learning another language so we can understand another culture.

Art

Art is a way of exploring the world around us through looking, drawing, playing and making.

DT

Design Technology helps us to plan, make and improve the things that we use.

Music

Enjoying music, playing music and singing grows our self-confidence and creativity.

Climate Change

No one is too small to make a difference.
