PE & Sports
“Physical education makes every child stronger - not just in body, but in character.”
(DfE PE Programme of Study, 2013)
PE & Sports Rationale
At Carlton Hill, we believe that physical education is about much more than developing motor skills. PE provides every child with the opportunity to build confidence, develop teamwork and experience the joy of movement. PE helps children understand how to stay healthy - physically and mentally - and instils lifelong values such as resilience, respect and self-belief. Our curriculum is designed to support healthy bodies and healthy minds, fostering motivation, responsibility and a positive sense of self. We are proud to be an active school where physical activity is celebrated and embedded across the school day, not just in PE lessons.
We aim to ensure that every child, regardless of background or ability, finds a form of physical activity they enjoy and feels empowered to pursue it. Whether through team games, dance, swimming, outdoor adventure or athletics, children develop not only physical competence but emotional wellbeing and character.

Physical Education in Our Own Words
PE at Carlton Hill is about participation, confidence and enjoyment. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that encourages every child to discover their strengths, develop new skills and take pride in their progress. We place emphasis on values such as teamwork, resilience, effort, respect and joy - values that we actively celebrate and reward throughout the school year.
We ensure that PE is accessible and engaging for all children. In every lesson, we focus on building the core elements of physical literacy: movement, balance, coordination, agility and fitness. These foundations are then developed through a range of sports, allowing children to apply and refine their skills in different contexts. We teach children to lead warm-ups, reflect on tactics and collaborate with others. Most importantly, we aim to help all children feel successful in PE.
Implementation and Coherence
Our PE curriculum is sequenced across the school to ensure progression in physical skills, understanding and attitudes to sport. From Reception to Year 6, children take part in indoor and outdoor units each half term, covering a diverse range of activities including gymnastics, dance, rugby, football, cricket, tennis, athletics, fitness and outdoor adventure activities.
The curriculum builds year on year. For example, in gymnastics, children in EYFS and Year 1 develop simple movements and balances, while children in Key Stage 2 begin to sequence and refine routines with increasing control and fluency. In team sports, early years and Key Stage 1 focus on spatial awareness and simple ball handling, progressing in later years to tactical decision-making and competitive play.
In addition to two weekly lessons, we embed physical activity through active playtimes, intra-school competitions and enrichment opportunities such as specialist coaching and sports trips, including:
- All children in Years 2-6 access swimming lessons at a local pool
- Children in Years 3-6 take part in a tennis tournament at a local tennis club
- Year 6 apply their volleyball skills in real matches at a local court
- Our football club uses local pitches to give children the chance to train and compete in an authentic setting
PE for All Learners (including SEND)
We are committed to ensuring that every child can access and enjoy physical education, including those with SEND and complex needs. At Carlton Hill, we use the STEP approach to adapt our lessons effectively:
- Space - We change the size or location of the playing area to suit individual needs
- Task - We modify the activity or break it into manageable steps
- Equipment - We provide adapted or alternative equipment where needed
- People - We adjust groupings or offer additional adult support
We view differentiation as a means of removing barriers and enabling access for all learners. PE lessons are designed with the whole class in mind and we actively plan how every child can participate, make progress and enjoy success.
Impact
We evaluate the success of our PE curriculum through a combination of formative assessment, observation, pupil voice and participation data. Teachers use observation and verbal feedback to assess progress in physical competence, collaboration and enjoyment. Across the year, staff make summative judgements on children’s confidence and skill development.
Intra-school competitions provide opportunities to see children apply skills in new contexts, while swimming progress is tracked to ensure pupils meet national expectations in water safety. We also monitor participation in extracurricular clubs to encourage inclusion and engagement for all, particularly disadvantaged pupils.
Children frequently speak with enthusiasm about PE and demonstrate strong understanding of its purpose. Pupil voice feedback shows that children value the range of activities, feel supported to improve, and enjoy representing their house or the school in sporting events.
Inspirations for Our Curriculum
Our PE curriculum is built on the expectations set out in the National Curriculum for Physical Education, which outlines the key knowledge and skills children should develop across primary school - including agility, balance, coordination, teamwork, competitive games and understanding how to lead healthy, active lives.
In designing and delivering our curriculum, we are also guided by the values of the AfPE (Association for Physical Education), which supports schools in delivering high-quality, inclusive PE that leads to positive physical and emotional development.
Locally, we align our provision with the Brighton & Hove School Games structure, a framework of competitions and festivals designed to give all children opportunities to participate, represent, and progress. This structure helps us to plan a balance of intra- and inter-school events throughout the year, from inclusive festivals that focus on fun and participation, to more competitive tournaments.

Sports Funding
What is the Sports Premium?
The PE and Sport Premium is government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality and breadth of physical education and sport. It is designed to ensure all children have the opportunity to lead active, healthy lifestyles and develop a lifelong love of physical activity. Schools receive this funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to their PE provision.
At Carlton Hill, we use the Sport Premium to enhance our curriculum, provide new opportunities for children, and build staff expertise. This includes bringing in specialist coaches, accessing local sports facilities, offering extra swimming sessions, and investing in high-quality equipment and training. Our goal is to ensure every child is engaged, included, and inspired through PE - now and into the future.
What have we used our funding for so far?
- Specialist PE coaching
- New sports equipment
- Swimming top-up sessions
- The use of local sports equipment/facilities
- Active break and lunchtime equipment
- Transport to inter-school events
- Membership to an educational platform
- CPD for our teaching team
What do we plan to do in 2022-2023
